Choosing The Right Cylinder For You

These humble devices harness the power of fluid dynamics to transform your operations. Hydraulic cylinders are the key to reliability and productivity. But when it is time for a new hydraulic cylinder, there are many options to choose from. It can be difficult to know which type is right for you. At Mac’s, we have a wide variety available, suitable for multiple applications and situations. Here are some of our most common types.

Single-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

These are the go-to when simplicity takes precedence. Leveraging hydraulic pressure in a single direction, these hydraulic cylinders provide a linear force that is perfect for straightforward tasks. When the pressure decreases, they gracefully return to their original position - the essence of efficiency.

Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

A step up from their single-acting cousins, these hydraulic cylinders use two ports to apply hydraulic fluid, achieving fluid motion in both directions. When you need bidirectional push-and-pull, these are the choice for you.

Displacement Hydraulic Cylinders

The workhorses of the hydraulic world, displacement hydraulic cylinders convert mechanical power into hydraulic power; this creates pressure by displacing fluid. They are essential for machines that require a consistent flow.

Pneumatic Cylinders

The embodiment of versatility, these cylinders use compressed air to create hydraulic pressure. A broad force from a minimal pressure differential makes them invaluable in applications like heavy load lifting.

Aluminum Hydraulic Cylinders

Favoring the lightness of aluminum, these cylinders are perfect for portable tools and equipment. Their corrosion resistance allows them to withstand the harshest conditions.

Tie-rod Hydraulic Cylinders

These cylinders owe their name to the rods that securely hold the end caps. Favorited for their sturdy design, these hydraulic cylinders are the backbone of many industrial applications.

Welded Stage Cylinders

These are perfect for high-pressure applications. The welded construction guarantees superior alignment and strength. Compact yet powerful, these hydraulic cylinders are designed to withstand the toughest challenges.

Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinders

Compact in design, but not to be underestimated, these cylinders extend several times their collapsed length. This allows them to deliver long strokes when space is at a premium. You’ll often spot them in dump trucks and forklifts.

Precision and adjustment are at the heart of these hydraulic cylinders. Essential for hitch control in tractors, they ensure smooth, effective operations, contributing to a boost in productivity.

Hydraulic Ram or Hydraulic Cylinder?

Are you unsure whether you are looking for a hydraulic ram or a hydraulic cylinder? You may have heard these terms used interchangeably, or you may be more familiar with one term than the other. At Mac’s, we think there are two important differences between these tools. First, whether they are stand-alone or integrated into a larger machine, and second, what their capacity is.

Our hydraulic rams range in size from 5 to 1100 tons and are generally stand-alone equipment that require 10,000 psi pumps to reach their maximum capacity.

Our hydraulic cylinders range from 100 PSI to 6,000 PSI and are integrated into machinery such as agricultural and construction equipment or manufacturing lines.

When considering what you will need for your project, it is important to define the requirements for your job. Will the application be built into machinery? Or will it stand alone? Will a capacity between 100 and 6000 PSI be sufficient, or will you need something stronger?

Careful consideration of load requirements and your system specifications will help you to select the appropriate tool of the right size and capacity for your job.
